Pilates originated from Joseph Pilates in the 1920’s and was originally started as rehab for prisoners of war. He studied many kinds of self-improvement systems as he was unhealthy as a child. In 1925 he moved from Germany to New York where he opened his first studio. He taught in New York from 1926 – 1966. Joseph Pilates remained in peak physical condition through his life until his death in 1967 at age 87.
